Summer is here, which means I’m absolutely dying to get out on the water! When temperatures rise, one of my favorite things to do is go boating. I’ve mentioned before that many of my favorite travel experiences include being on a boat, but you don’t have to jet off to some far-flung exotic place to do so. You can make perfect summertime boating memories right here in the USA. It was tough to narrow down my top stateside boating experiences, but here they are:
3. Cruising the Canals – St. Petersburg, Florida
St. Petersburg was the perfect relaxing retreat to get away from the hustle and bustle and take a “time-out” from my normal busy life for a few days. My favorite part of this weekend getaway? Hands down, it was cruising through the city’s canals. Boating the peaceful canals were the perfect way to spend a day out on the water. Relax, soak up the sun, check out the luxurious waterfront homes, take in the killer sunsets and then pull up to one of the area’s dockside restaurants for dinner.
2. Island Hopping – San Juan Islands, Washington
On of my most memorable “quick trips” to date has been to the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington state. If you ask me, this slice of paradise in the Pacific Northwest is one of the most underrated destinations in the USA. And, what better way to explore the archipelago of islands than by boat? The area is brimming with natural beauty and wildlife. Chances are you’ll sight some seals and bald eagles. And, if you’re really lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of one of the animals the islands have become famous for… an orca whale!
3. Island Exploration – Key West, Florida
Key West was a delightful surprise to me. The island offers a ton for travelers to do and see, including historical sights, a renown culinary scene and legendary nightlife. But, you’ve done Key West all wrong if you don’t get out on a boat to see and experience the island from the water. When the south Florida heat starts to get to you, hop in the water and snorkel for a bit. Or, take some kayaks with you and explore the shady mangroves.
Can’t hop a plane to one of these locations anytime soon? Luckily, there are plenty of opportunities to boat right in your backyard! Check out Discover Boating for tips and online resources.
