I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to soak up some sun this summer! But, before I bust out my bikini, I always take a minute to make sure I plan for skin safety. So, what’s in my pool bag this year? Here’s my 3 Summertime Essentials for Fun in the Sun:
A No Nonsense, Ride-or-Die Sunscreen
Let’s face it: skin cancer is no joke. My travels take me to some pretty extreme weather conditions where sunscreen is super important. Whether I’m glacier hiking in New Zealand or laying out by the pool in Bali, I need a serious sunscreen to save my skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
Also, here’s something you may not know about me: I’m pale and I admit it! But, I don’t let my fair complexion prevent me from taking full advantage of my time outside, whether at home in Atlanta or when traveling abroad.
I’ve tried (what feels like) nearly every sunscreen on the market and the one that has become my favorite is Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen. Why I love it: this sunscreen is formulated to protect against some of the most extreme weather conditions in the world. Natural minerals like Zinc Oxide act like millions of tiny mirrors to reflect harmful UV rays BEFORE they enter your body.
One application lasts for hours, even through a sweaty jungle trek or walking around central america on a scorching hot day. Blue Lizard goes on creamy and doesn’t feel greasy. As a cool bonus, the bottle changes colors when it detects UV rays (a great reminder that I need to apply sunscreen even on cloudy overcast days). You can click here to purchase the Sensitive Formula and here to purchase the Face Formula on Amazon (hello, Prime shipping).
Of note: my good friend recently took her 8-month-old to the beach for the first time and used Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen because all the “mommy blogs” and Facebook groups raved about it. I’ve learned if the moms love it, I’ll love it too, because moms don’t have time to mess around! Baby was sunburn-free and my friend loved that the sensitive formula didn’t irritate her son’s skin!
A Flirty Hat
I don’t know about you, but I kind of miss the days when women wore hats. Maybe I still have Royal Wedding fever, but I’m glad that summer has given me an excuse to flirt it up a bit with a wide-brimmed sunhat. On a more practical note, a hat hat will help keep the sun off your face, chest, and shoulders. These areas tend to be high-risk for skin cancer, so make sure to keep them covered when you can! Sneak a wink from under the brim of your hat at that cutie across the pool (even if you’ve been married to him for five years!) and see what transpires 😊
A Pair of Fun Sunnies
Every summer I treat myself to a new pair of sunglasses. I started this tradition because, in my younger, wilder days, I was unable to keep up with one pair for more than a few months at a time and I needed a new pair by the time summer rolled around again. Now that I am so much more cultured (ahem) and mature (AHEM!), I take the “treat yo self” to the next level and splurge a little. I don’t feel too guilty about it because good eyewear is essential if you’re planning to spend time outside, especially if you’re on the water. In my opinion, every girl needs a few essential styles of sunglasses: classic aviators, trendy round lens, sassy cateye lens and a fun pair of oversize frames.
Are YOU stocked up for summertime travel? What’s in your pool bag or carry-on for this summer?
